Becca's Pick
Falling Slowly, Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová
A bride recently asked me to learn this song for her upcoming wedding processional, and I haven't been able to get it out of my head ever since. This song was featured in the 2007 motion picture Once, which also starred Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, and won an Academy Award for Best Original Song the following year.
Will's Pick
Go With the Flow, Queens of the Stone Age
From their eponymous debut to Villains, Queens of the Stone Age often imbue their tunes with a dash of cheek and whimsy, but never less than a giant helping of bad-to-the-bone gritty riffs. This one is arguably their masterpiece, with a wailing lead line that's a joy to waltz around the fretboard with.
Sam's Pick
Heyr þú oss himnum á, Anna Thorvaldsdottir
Set to an old Icelandic psalm, this a cappella choral work showcases Anna Thorvaldsdottir's mastery of writing rich choral textures. The lush harmonies build and combine to create a landscape of sound—the result is truly stunning.
Chris' Pick
The Luckiest, Ben Folds
This song is a wonderful piano ballad that I first came across when asked to play it for a wedding ceremony. Ben Folds' lyrics are just as beautiful as the piano notes.
Dan's Pick
The Godfather (Love Theme), Nino Rota
With theaters closed around the world, summer movie season feels a bit different this year—making it the perfect opportunity to catch up on (or revisit) old classics. One of my favorite movie themes to play on trumpet is the love theme from The Godfather ("The Godfather Waltz" is pretty good too!). First introduced as an instrumental theme in the 1972 film, "The Godfather (Love Theme)" later became popularized by Andy Williams as "Speak Softly, Love."
Annie's Pick
Come Home, OneRepublic
I've been on a OneRepublic kick lately, so my pick for this month is "Come Home", written by Ryan Tedder. From their 2007 debut Dreaming Out Loud, this song is an emotional plea written for a friend of Tedder's who was deployed overseas. Soon after, Beyoncé contacted Tedder because of "Come Home," which led to him writing the Grammy-winning hit, "Halo."
