Staff Picks: August 2020
Our Sheet Music Direct team plays, strums and sings just as much as you do! We're a team of musicians who love music of various styles and, when we're not busy with all things Sheet Music Direct, play at home, church, and gigs. Each month, we're sharing some of the favorite songs we're currently playing and why we think you'll love them too. Chris' Pick
Shape of My Heart, Sting
This song, from Sting's 1993 album Ten Summoner's Tales, includes one of my all-time favorite acoustic guitar riffs. Overall, it's a beautiful song for guitarists, pianists, and vocalists to play/sing.
Annie's Pick
The Schuyler Sisters, Lin-Manuel Miranda
My staff pick this month is the brand new piano solo arrangement of Lin-Manuel Miranda's "The Schuyler Sisters" from Hamilton. Although challenging, the driving bassline, syncopated rhythms and crunchy chords make this David Pearl arrangement really fun to play!
Will's Pick
The Way We Get By, Spoon
Hailing from Austin, Texas, spiky perennial alt-rockers Spoon may have had a revolving door line-up over the years, but there's nothing inconsistent about their output. This one's a piano-led stomper that can't be missed.
Sam's Pick
You Learn (from Jagged Little Pill), Alanis Morissette
Seminal album Jagged Little Pill recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, and it has recently spawned a Broadway musical of the same name. Whilst the album boasts several hit singles, "You Learn" is my personal favorite with its uplifting chorus and scrumptious vocal harmonies. Expert arranger Mark Brymer's choral version of the song really captures the mood of the Broadway show's closing number.
Becca's Pick
Easy Lover, Phil Collins & Philip Bailey
This month's jam for me is "Easy Lover"—performed by Philip Bailey (of Earth, Wind & Fire) and Phil Collins (of Genesis). It's got a unique intro, a great guitar solo, and a catchy, memorable chorus that'll be in your head for hours!
Bill's Pick
Harvest Moon, Neil Young
Simply put, this is just an overall beautiful song, perfect for the upcoming autumn season. Best-served with an acoustic guitar.
