Staff Picks: September 2020
Our Sheet Music Direct team plays, strums and sings just as much as you do! We're a team of musicians who love music of various styles and, when we're not busy with all things Sheet Music Direct, play at home, church, and gigs. Each month, we're sharing some of the favorite songs we're currently playing and why we think you'll love them too. Sam's Pick
Lights, Florian Christl
Florian Christl might just be my favorite contemporary classical composer to play right now. His new album Episodes contains some truly stunning melodic piano work, and none more so than "Lights" which has a beautiful poignancy to it.
Dan's Pick
The Mandalorian, Ludwig Göransson
Following the success of his Oscar and Grammy Award-winning Black Panther score, Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson's latest work comes from the Disney+ Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. The music fits perfectly within the Star Wars universe, yet it is also unique in a way that we haven't heard from Star Wars before. Get ready for Season 2 next month by learning this epic theme for Piano Solo, Concert Band, and Marching Band.
Will's Pick
Jesus Hairdo, The Charlatans
With frontman Tim Burgess connecting people through music during lockdown via album listening parties on Twitter, now's the time to revisit this classic from Up To Our Hips, available here in combined PVG and guitar tab arrangement. Tune to open E, dust off that slide and dig in.
Annie's Pick
Prelude in Db Major, Op. 28, No. 15 (Raindrop), Frédéric Chopin
Since it's been so gloomy and rainy over the last two weeks here in Milwaukee, my pick this month is Frédéric Chopin's "Raindrop" Prelude, Op. 28, No. 15. This prelude is nicknamed "Raindrop" due to the repeating A-flat throughout the piece, resembling a steady rainfall. This is a great piece for learning to "sing out" the melody line and play expressively.
Bill's Pick
33 "GOD", Bon Iver
Bon Iver's music is beautiful, but sometimes a bit too complex to play as a solo on piano. This song, from 2016's 22, A Million, translates particularly well and works with or without vocals.
Chris' Pick
I Sing Because I'm Happy, Rollo Dilworth
This uplifting choral title by composer and arranger extraordinaire Rollo Dilworth is adapted from the gospel-style interpretation of the hymn "His Eye Is On the Sparrow." Voicings include SATB, 2-Part, 3-Part Treble, with demo and accompaniment audio also available.
