Laura's Pick
Watermelon Sugar, Harry Styles
Harry Styles' performance of "Watermelon Sugar" at the Grammy Awards reminded me how fun musically this song is and how worthy it was to win Best Pop Solo Performance. It has a bright, summery sound which is always welcomed this time of year.
Sam's Pick
La Fille Aux Pouvoirs Magiques, Stephan Moccio
Grammy and Academy Award-nominated composer Stephan Moccio is probably best-known for his work as a producer and songwriter (of which Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" is a notable credit.) But, being the classically-trained pianist that he is, Moccio has gone back to basics with his recent solo piano album Tales of Solace. It's a warm, melodic and emotive album from start to finish and very enjoyable to play on the piano, especially this meditative album closer.
Bill's Pick
Nightswimming, R.E.M.
A beautiful song from R.E.M.'s revered album, Automatic for the People, "Nightswimming" features a gorgeously simple piano part coupled with of the most beautifully poetic lyrics ever written.
Chris' Pick
Leave the Door Open, Silk Sonic
Silk Sonic's debut release, a collaboration between superstars Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, is a smooth jam reminiscent of Soul and R&B hits from decades past.
Annie's Pick
Maybe (from Annie), Charles Strouse
For obvious reasons, Annie was my favorite musical growing up. Charles Strouse's "Maybe" is such a beautiful song and it brings a feeling of nostalgia whenever I hear it. Surprisingly, according to Strouse's memoir Put on a Happy Face, the opening melody of "Maybe" was the same melody he had written for a beer commercial that had been rejected. This song was added to the musical during previews to get the audience to emotionally connect to Annie's problem earlier in the show.
Dan's Pick
Bang!, AJR
Alternative pop trio AJR (comprised of three brothers) are known for their experimental production with many layers and unique sounds. For the unacquainted, there's a good chance you've heard their 2020 single "Bang!" as the song's infectious chorus appeared in Apple's holiday ads and throughout ESPN's NCAA basketball coverage. The group describes the song as having a "darker, horn-heavy vibe, where the verses are small and mysterious, and the chorus explodes into this theatrical trap chorus."
