Staff Picks: September 2021

Our Sheet Music Direct team plays, strums and sings just as much as you do! We're a team of musicians who love music of various styles and, when we're not busy with all things Sheet Music Direct, play at home, church, and gigs. Each month, we're sharing some of the favorite songs we're currently playing and why we think you'll love them too. Check out our staff picks for September below or head over to our Staff Picks page which we update regularly with the latest picks.

Sam's Pick
New York, New York, Ryan Adams

Released 20 years ago this month, Ryan Adams' second studio album Gold is his most successful to date. Taken from this album – and not to be confused with the Frank Sinatra classic of the same name – "New York, New York" is an infectious tribute to Big Apple, and it's always been one of my favorite songs to play and sing in covers gigs (and you don't even need to know many chords!)

Becca's Pick
Maggie's Song, Chris Stapleton

I'm already a huge fan of Chris Stapleton, but after seeing him in concert last week, he is just as good (if not better) live than he is on his albums – phenomenal player and songwriter.

If you love dogs (or if you have any other pets in your household), check out "Maggie's Song" from his most recent album Starting Over – this song is sure to hit home for you. If you haven't heard this emotional song before, check it out – and grab a tissue while you're at it.

Laura's Pick
The Tradition, Halsey

Halsey's latest album, If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power starts with the solemn, piano centric "The Tradition," which features some of her most vivid songwriting. The sad yet intriguing song also co-written by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross sets the tone for the rest of the concept album.

Annie's Pick
New York State of Mind [jazz version], Billy Joel

Billy Joel started writing "New York State Of Mind" in 1976 while he was actually "taking a Greyhound on the Hudson River line" on his way home to New York. He finished the song as soon as he arrived home. This bluesy jazz arrangement is from Hal Leonard's All Jazzed Up series.

Dan's Pick
A Jazzy Christmas, Johnnie Vinson

Put a little swing in your Christmas programs this year with Johnnie Vinson's "A Jazzy Christmas" for Concert Band. This fresh and creative take on "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," "The Holly and the Ivy", and "Good King Wenceslas" is fun to play and will be sure to delight your audiences this season. There's also a Flex-Band arrangement, perfect for bands with incomplete or unbalanced instrumentation.

And So It Goes, The King's Singers

One of the King's Singers' most-requested arrangements in a lush a cappella setting, Billy Joel's hit ballad "And So It Goes," arranged by Bob Chilcott.
