Staff Picks: February 2022

Our Sheet Music Direct team plays, strums and sings just as much as you do! We're a team of musicians who love music of various styles and, when we're not busy with all things Sheet Music Direct, play at home, church, and gigs. Each month, we're sharing some of the favorite songs we're currently playing and why we think you'll love them too. Becca's Pick
You Are, Lionel Richie

Lionel Richie wrote this song alongside his then-wife Brenda nearly 40 years ago, and features singer Richard Marx on backing vocals on this track from Richie's debut album. Richie then re-released this song in 2012 as a duet with Blake Shelton on his Tuskegee album, which is equally enjoyable. The perfect song for February and Valentine's Day!

Bill's Pick
First Day of My Life, Bright Eyes

Valentine's Day is right around the corner, which means love is in the air. And nothing says love to me like a song that holds special meaning to both you and your partner. "First Day of My Life" by Bright Eyes is that song for me and my wife. It's our perfectly imperfect love song, and it just might be yours as well. Give a listen, give it a play. If nothing else, watch the music video and try not to cry while your heart melts.

Bruce's Pick
Delilah, Tom Jones

Most people think "What's New Pussycat?" when hearing his name, but I find "Delilah" to be the quintessential Tom Jones song. You're hypnotized by those first notes of the piano, then get lulled in by the over-the-top story being told through Jones' almost operatic singing. It's a song that I have always thought would've been perfect for Elvis Presley to cover during his early 70s Vegas concerts. And a song that my dad and I can't resist singing in terrible—but hysterically fun—karaoke sessions. If you've got a piano and this song playing, I'll make sure your tip jar isn't lonely.

Sam's Pick
Guiding Light, Alexis Ffrench

After 2018's Evolution and 2020's Dreamland it felt like we were due new music from Alexis Ffrench. And, true to form, the contemporary classical composer's new album Truth will be landing in May. "Guiding Light" – the lead single from the album, is a beautiful and emotive piece which is just lovely to play on the piano, and has me excited to hear more new music from the forthcoming album.

Laura's Pick
Olympic Fanfare and Theme, John Williams

In honor of John Williams' 90th Birthday and the Winter Olympics in Beijing underway, "Olympic Fanfare and Theme" is one of the most iconic and epic scores of all time. If you were to set the piece to almost anything, you'd feel like an Olympian yourself. Folding laundry? Gold for crisp folding! Playing the sixteenth notes in this piece perfectly? Gold for execution! It's a such powerful piece in John Williams' already influential and impressive catalog.

Annie's Pick
Intermezzo in A Major (from Six Piano Pieces, Op. 118, No. 2), Johannes Brahms

If you're looking for a new classical piano piece to play, Brahms' Intermezzo Op. 118, No. 2 is a beautiful choice! With its interweaving melodies, playing this piece is so calming and almost meditative (unless you play a wrong note and get mad at yourself!).
