Staff Picks: August 2022

Our Sheet Music Direct team plays, strums and sings just as much as you do! We're a team of musicians who love music of various styles and, when we're not busy with all things Sheet Music Direct, play at home, church, and gigs. Each month, we're sharing some of the favorite songs we're currently playing and why we think you'll love them too. Olivia Newton-John will always be our Sandy forever! "Hopelessly Devoted to You" highlighted her amazing and wonderful voice that drew people into Grease and Olivia herself.

Prelude in D-flat Major, Op. 28, No. 15 (Raindrop), Frederic Chopin

Op. 28, No. 15 (also known as the "Raindrop Prelude") may be the most well-known of Chopin's piano cycle, 24 Preludes. In what starts out as a rather unassuming piece, the serenity of the opening slowly builds into a tension-filled interlude, before returning us once again to the safety of where it all began. Much like a storm rolling in, tormenting us with its natural fury, then fading away again as if nothing ever happened other than the ongoing cycle of life.

Sam's Pick
Underdog, Alicia Keys (arr. Roger Emerson)

As a Brit, there's something in our psyche which makes us root for the underdog, and this song by Alicia Keys addresses topics such as homelessness, discrimination and single motherhood. Right from the acoustic guitar opening, I love the laid-back vibe of the song, and Roger Emerson's choral arrangement hits the spot, as ever.

Annie's Pick
Main Title (from The Queen's Gambit), Carlos Rafael Rivera

During the pandemic, more and more people started playing chess online. The release of Netflix's The Queen's Gambit in October 2020 accelerated this chess boom even more. The Emmy-winning score by Carlos Rafael Rivera perfectly matches the suspenseful atmosphere of the show and draws viewers into Beth's chess journey.

Welcome to Jurassic Park (from Jurassic Park), John Williams

Jurassic Park has one of the most iconic film themes (by the inimitable John Williams) and it's fun to play on any instrument, or as part of an ensemble. I've even been known to hum it to my kids at bedtime on occasion.

Reminiscing, Little River Band

One of my favorite easy listening pop songs from the 1970s, this classic includes a great melody and many smooth, jazzy chord changes. Play on electric piano for full effect!
