Staff Picks: October 2023
Our Sheet Music Direct team plays, strums and sings just as much as you do! We're a team of musicians who love music of various styles and, when we're not busy with all things Sheet Music Direct, play at home, church, and gigs. Each month, we're sharing some of the favorite songs we're currently playing and why we think you'll love them too. I Put a Spell on You, Nina Simone
Originally written and recorded by Screamin' Jay Hawkins in 1956, "I Put a Spell on You" was covered by Nina Simone on her album of the same name nine years later, and there's something truly majestic about her version. I also love the intricate little touches in the high register of the piano.
Annie's Pick
bury a friend, Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish's "bury a friend" is a pretty dark song, with an equally creepy music video to match. According to Eilish, the song lyrics are written from the point of view of the monster under her bed. It was inspired by her experience with night terrors and sleep paralysis.
Becca's Pick
Hungry Like the Wolf, Duran Duran
This song was released in 1982 and became a Halloween favorite very quickly. The recording contains a LOT of fun synth work and is a fun challenge to replicate (in a cover band setting); however, it's also fun to just play the Piano, Vocal and Guitar arrangement on piano as well. This song is one of Duran Duran's most popular songs, winning them a Grammy in one of the music video categories.

Danse Macabre, Camille Saint-Saëns
This hauntingly beautiful piece by Camille Saint-Saëns captures the eerie spirit of Halloween with its spooky melodies and lively rhythms. It's a perfect choice for musicians looking to add a touch of macabre elegance to their Halloween repertoire.
George's Pick
Ghostbusters, Ray Parker Jr.
The "Ghostbusters" theme song, by Ray Parker Jr., is a catchy and iconic tune that perfectly complements the fun and quirky spirit of the film. With its memorable lyrics and upbeat melody, it remains a timeless classic, instantly recognizable and a must-play. Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!
Louise's Pick
One Summer's Day (from Spirited Away), Joe Hisaishi
Despite the summery title, this poignant piece is from the unconventionally spooky film Spirited Away, from Studio Ghibli. This wistful, sentimental piece perfectly reflects the complex, bittersweet nature of the film. Listen out for glimpses of mysterious, dissonant harmonies for an injection of spooky undertones this Halloween season.
